Outcomes Based Contracting: Governance

A new approach to contracting changes the relationship between payers and providers by transferring risk, redefining responsibility and setting performance goals in a whole new currency; however, a payer’s accountability for the quality and safety of services does not change, nor does their responsibility to ensure value. Effective governance means committing to managing the tensions and challenges that may inhibit the transformation of a care system. A well-designed framework of good governance is essential to manage the strategic, financial and economic risks inherent in the transition from a traditional approach to contracting.
